Calcium is necessary for the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. Calcium is the body’s most abundant mineral, making up nearly 2 % of total body weight. Approximately 99% of the body’s calcium is in the bones. The body maintains a steady level of calcium in the blood by moving calcium from bones into blood. Long term dietary deficiency of calcium may lead to the depletion of the bone calcium stores, rendering the bones weak and prone to fracture.
Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a bone disease that leads to an increased risk of fractures. Calcium intake, when combined with sufficient vitamin D, healthy diet, and regular exercise, may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.
Absorption: Calcium absorption is affected by several factors, including the form of calcium, a person’s health condition, age, concomitantly administered drugs and interaction with food. Gastro-intestinal pH has a bearing on the absorption of calcium with optimal absorption occurring in the stomach (acidic). Vitamin D aids the intestinal absorption of calcium.
Calcium Supplement Sources: Calcium is available in various dosage forms including capsules, chewable tablets, and may be delivered as calcium acetate, calcium ascorbate, calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, bone meal, and oyster shell among other forms. Calcium carbonate is the most common and one of the least expensive forms of calcium, but it may not be well absorbed by many people with reduced levels of gastric acid. Taking calcium carbonate with meals may improve the absorption. For many people, chelated calcium is better absorbed than calcium carbonate.
